Weltlokalisierungstag 21. Juni -> Bitte Karten aktualisieren

Local Futures, eine weltweite NGO, initiierte 2020 den World Localization Day.

Invitation by Local Futures

I am reaching out from Local Futures – an international non-profit organization dedicated to renewing ecological and social wellbeing by strengthening communities and local economies worldwide.

For the seventh year in a row, we are convening World Localization Day (WLD) – an annual celebration of the worldwide localization movement that takes place in June.

World Localization Day is our chance to link up across borders and make our collective voice heard. It’s an opportunity to shine light on localization as a systemic strategy for change, not only on June 21 – the day itself, but during the entire month of June. It’s your opportunity to raise awareness about the localization actions you are already involved with – whether it be community gardens, supporting local business initiatives, protesting globalization, etc that are part of the ‘movement of movements’ to bring the economy home.

To this end, we’d like to welcome you to share and contribute to this year’s program, by hosting an event of some kind – online or in person – through June 2025. Our events ‘sign up’ form makes it easy to share your event with our networks and the world via social media.

We aim to have a month-long programme of events worldwide – so you can pick any date that suits you in June. As in previous years, Local Futures will host an online event on World Localization Day itself – June 21. The event is free and open to all.

A bit of background. Launched in 2020, WLD brought together diverse voices from across the world in a first ever global celebration of localization. People tuned in from 172 countries. In 2021 more than 80 organizations in 30 countries came together to co-create a month-long program that included online and in-person events with focus on localization, with a special focus on local food systems. In 2022, we released Planet Local: A Quiet Revolution – a film about the worldwide grassroots movement for localization, screened by groups on six continents and now freely available in 16 languages and counting. Continuing on from this, in 2024, we released The Power of Local, highlighting various, diverse practical, inspiring examples of localization in action around the world.

We want to build on these efforts and believe that at this time of growing global social and environmental crises, the time is right to put localization in focus worldwide. By localization we are referring to a process of change aimed at reducing the stranglehold of multinational corporations on our economies and lives, while simultaneously building up regional self-reliance (food in particular) and healthy local economies. Opposite to the narrow-minded nationalism, xenophobia and chauvinism rising in the world today, localization provides a humane, internationalist alternative that can unite people around a positive program of both strengthening their local economies, and increasing global understanding, tolerance and cooperation.

We know the myriad of projects and organizations that make up the localization ‘movement of movements’ (like yours) are active in their communities every day of the year: local food initiatives, decentralised renewable energy projects, local business alliances, local finance, revival of local knowledge systems and more.

We’d suggest hosting an in-person or online activity, event or campaign. It could be putting on a local food feast, visiting local food producers, hosting a community film screening, talk or workshop about a global-to-local shift, organising a buy local campaign, a seed sharing festival,  a community repair café or other with a focus on strengthening our local economy, community and food systems.

If you decide to participate, we will include your event/activity in the World Localization Day programme and feature your organisation as a partner. We will also help to promote through our social media channels.

Please let us know if you are planning to participate, or if you know someone who would.
